And the smartest one as well

13

u/Bstuff963 Oct 18 '21

I guess everyone born from 1970-2000 is considered "smart".

Unless they're amish. Amish most likely don't know what RCA cables are.

I think this is the best meme I'll see this week.

Only because you're tuned into channel 3 though.

u/sterile_spermwhale__ Oct 17 '21

Ooh it's actually a marvelous meme. Brings back memories, somehow

44

u/vraetzught Oct 17 '21

Certainly.

Reminds me of the time I plugged the red and white connector from my PS2 to the AUX port of my stereo system, cranked up the bass and started playing BLACK.

My mom came up 2 floors to check what was going on.

11

u/sterile_spermwhale__ Oct 17 '21

Lol, same. I used it for my PS2. Trying to find the function of the wires felt like nasa to us. Idk why I had more fun in the PS2 than I did in the ps3 and 4.

6

u/vraetzught Oct 17 '21

Well, I still play my PS2 from time to time.

Never owned a PS3 or 4 myself, but my ex had both. They were fun consoles, but I rather stick to my PC.

PS2 will always be a dose of nostalgia though. The system still works and my collection of games is decent. I don't think I would ever sell it.

2

u/sterile_spermwhale__ Oct 17 '21

I only owned the ps3, and still do I mostly play far cry 3, gta V and call of duty black ops 2. It's getting repetitive but I still love it. Just like gta san Andreas. It was a lil tiring but it was another level of fun.

I still remember those moments of anxiety when u had to wait for the cd to run. Otherwise the red screen appeared. Imo, that constant trial and error made the reward of the simpler games more fun

Games aren't that bad anymore, they are just a lil too complex but a lot simplified at the same time.

Nvm, have a great day G

Those cables were actually found on old DVD players and were the main connections to the TV. The Yellow cable was for the video signal while the red and white were for the left and right audio signals.

Van Gogh cut off his one ear but could see fine, that's why he is represented with a video cable and just one audio cable.

Beethoven was deaf in both ears so he is just represented with a video cable.

Stevie Wonders is blind so he has no video cable but two perfectly fine audio cables...

Hope this helps

184

u/iiitme Oct 17 '21

Makes so much sense now. I used to have a million of those cords

45

u/skalp69 Oct 17 '21

And game consoles

20

u/MadEyeMovement Oct 17 '21

Any appliance connected to the TV. Sometimes through a SCART adapter.

4

u/BobMcGeoff2 Oct 17 '21

The most complex part of the wii

3

u/pizzaboieatspizza Professional Dumbass Oct 17 '21

The wii has them

17

u/RolyPoly1320 Oct 17 '21

Fun Fact: They color coded them because people wanted an easy way to tell what went to where. You can use them interchangeably as long as the ends go to the same connection on the TV. So you can use the red cables in the yellow connector as long as it goes to the yellow connector on the TV. It's all the same cable otherwise.

4

u/xESHANx Oct 18 '21

My entire life is a lie. How have I never realized this.

3

u/44problems Oct 18 '21

Those desperate times when you tried using two separate red-white cables because you didn't have a yellow-red-white cable, and it worked!

1

u/AzureArmageddon Oct 18 '21

Metal is made of metal yes

1

u/RolyPoly1320 Oct 18 '21

Some still think there is something special in the cables to make them work so you should always match them when you don't need to so long as the Y port on one is wired to the Y port on the other.

1

u/AzureArmageddon Oct 18 '21

It is a white lie though since the colours have a purpose though not physically required for the connection to work

2

u/RolyPoly1320 Oct 18 '21

On the connection terminals yes, the cables were colored to match so people knew to connect yellow on their VCR to yellow on their TV. Not really a lie and much as idiot proofing the connection.

7

u/abbynorma1 Oct 17 '21

DVD players... LOL

6

u/Sougo2001 Oct 17 '21

old DVD players

They're not that old! I'm not that old!! >:'(

0

u/nicki419 Breaking EU Laws Oct 17 '21

DVD players are actually pretty young. They were used back in VHS players and game consoles, most notably the NES. By today's standard, they're total shit haha

2

u/Bstuff963 Oct 18 '21 edited Oct 18 '21

Quoting Wikipedia:

"Prices for the first players in 1997 started at $600 and could top out at prices over $1000."

DVDs were also 720p.

Edit: DVDs were 480i

1

u/44problems Oct 18 '21

No, DVDs were 480i. Progressive scan players came out that made it 480p, but DVDs weren't high definition. (576i in PAL countries)

2

u/Bstuff963 Oct 18 '21

Ah nice, thanks for the info.

0

u/nicki419 Breaking EU Laws Oct 18 '21

I don't see why you quote. They are pretty young, in comparison to the NES, for example.

Also, they are SD, not 720

1

u/Bstuff963 Oct 18 '21

I admit, DVDs were 480i, but, https://i.imgur.com/tOvovf9.png

0

u/nicki419 Breaking EU Laws Oct 19 '21

720p refers to vertical resolution, not horizontal. What you linked is PAL Standard Definition.

2

u/Gunhawk817 Oct 17 '21

I remember using them and seeing them in my mum’s old car for the little tv screen. I didn’t remember but now I do. Thank you

2

u/ComfortableVariety48 Oct 17 '21

I'm proud that I figured out on my own what the red and yellow were myself, the white tho I had no idea, thank you

2

u/Rammstein_is_great Oct 17 '21

I was stuck on the white cable so thanks

2

u/nicki419 Breaking EU Laws Oct 17 '21

Some more "technical" info: the cables were called composite. They allowed for analogue video transfer of both PAL and NTSC Standard Definition Color video and dual channel (stereo) analogue audio transfer.

They were the direct successor to you standard RF cable, which is a single cable for video and audio, and would connect to your TV's antenna input.

Given its age, it was actually used in the home market as far back as early VHS players and home consoles, most notably the Nintendo Entertainment System.

2

u/Meepo_The_Amazing https://www.youtube.com/watch/dQw4w9WgXcQ Oct 18 '21

I thought that was Ray Charles

1

u/Stella-Mira Oct 17 '21

Why would you need two cables for left and right?

1

u/vraetzught Oct 17 '21

Better signal than a single cable carrying both, like headphones do.

1

u/Greenbay7115 Oct 17 '21

I knew they were A/V cables, I just didn't know which was which. Thanks a lot!

7

u/nihilisim_themarmots Oct 17 '21

Old school RCA audio video cables.

3

u/iiitme Oct 17 '21

I mean I know what the cords are I’m old enough but I still don’t get it but imma try

3

u/SerpentM52 Oct 17 '21

Well, maybe video, but RCA is still the most common line audio standard today.

17

u/LameSquadSamson Oct 17 '21

I have to say this every time this meme is reposted... Beethoven was never completely deaf. He was fine until his 30’s when he lost his hearing in his higher range, but he could still hear basically fine. It is why is pieces written toward the end of this life are noticeably lower in range.

Now I must go.

5

u/Bstuff963 Oct 18 '21

Thank you for the fact. I didn't know that.

Vincent should have got a white RCA plug, the standard for the left (his remaining ear in this portrait). Am I being anal retentive?

2

u/Surfer_Mitch Oct 17 '21

Red is correct for his mirror image

2

u/gravspeed Oct 18 '21

Looks like he used a mirror, he cut his left ear off, the image is correct.

I was thinking the exact same thing though.

1

u/gravspeed Oct 18 '21

Did he paint his self portrait from a picture or a mirror?

Brb, gonna have to go Google this

1

u/SaltDeposit- https://www.youtube.com/watch/dQw4w9WgXcQ Oct 17 '21

What I'm guessing is the green difference connector on an RGB or Y Pr Cr cable.

1

I don’t know what the green cable did but I always plugged it in

1

1

u/SaltDeposit- https://www.youtube.com/watch/dQw4w9WgXcQ Oct 17 '21

Red is a second audio connection for stereo sound.

1

u/aaaaaaahhhhhhh132 Oct 17 '21

red is video, yellow is audio, and white is, what, color?

1

u/VersedFlame Mods Are Nice People Oct 17 '21

Red and White are both audio iirc. This picture was in one of my exams and the joke is that Van Gogh only had one ear so only one of the audio cables.

1

u/Tarkus_Edge Oct 17 '21

Then there's Helen Keller.

1

u/Presticles1981 Oct 17 '21

Red on top would be white; white is mono, while red is stereo.

2

1

But just because Van Gogh has his external ear cut off, doesn't mean he can't hear from that ear.

yellow plug represents visual

white plug represents vocal

red plug represents hearing

it was as simple as deductive reasoning

1

u/dukeofunk Oct 18 '21

0

u/fredoblenko Oct 17 '21

The red one on big vincent should be in half

3

u/efferkah Grumpy Cat Oct 17 '21

What? Why?

Red is for right audio output, white is for left. Van Gogh cut his left ear, therefore the white is missing, leaving only the right ear/audio, keeping the video intact.

Why should the red one cut in half?
