WOW!. I have never seen that.

820

u/Tongue8cheek 7d ago

Yeah, seldom do they ball up like this. Most arm dildos stay erect.

228

u/pie_monster 7d ago

The one in the vid does look like it's sporting a woody. Makes me suspicious about it's motives and keenness for balling up.

141

u/picklestixatix 7d ago

You certainly have a keen eye for spotting an erect penis. Good job Jnr Attenborough.

54

u/pie_monster 7d ago edited 6d ago

Why thank you. I'm neither trained, nor qualified in penis-spotting. Guess I just got lucky this time.

20

u/moaiii 7d ago

Why did you make me look?

12

u/stiletto929 7d ago

Now I can’t unsee armadillo anatomy. Thx, dude

5

u/NordicGold 7d ago

What's the dick to body size ratio on this little guy? I thought it was a tail but then I saw another so not bad. Gotta save the jewels.

This is a three banded armadillo. Despite common misconceptions, they’re the only species that could fully ball up. The species we have in the US cannot

Y’know, I obviously knew they could do this, but I never realized how quickly and efficiently they could roll up, always assumed it was kind of a last resort, clumsy kind of ball that doesn’t stay totally shut but this lil mf literally just did a Sonic the Hedghog move.

783

u/peerintomymind 7d ago

I kind of expected it to be fast because they might need to hide from a predator in a last second emergency. However, the whole motion felt uncanny the first few times I watched it until I figured out why; in the motion, it's body slamming its own head into the ground! It makes sense though because it would make their head a bit harder for any predators to get at.

169

u/Roflkopt3r 7d ago

As far as I can track it, the point that lands on the ground seems a fair bit behind the actual neck. I'd estimate it around here.

94

u/I_like_bacons 7d ago

TIL what an armadillo penis looks like.

63

u/El-Chewbacc 7d ago

Wonder if it has trouble doing this with an erection. He’s like “oh shot oh shit please go down please go down they’re coming!”

75

u/iJustDiedFromScience 7d ago Brighten My Day

When they roll up they put it in their mouth. It's a nice little treat while the danger passes.

It seems like it's landing right on the base of its neck, at least going by how my C7 vertebra tingles in sympathy.

Almost. It looks like the product designer put the origin of the scale-pattern at the impact point. (Slightly further back than your picture.)

Clever. It looks good from all angles, and makes the armour tougher, coz the weak point is hidden.

(I’d like an AMA from the team - I wanna ask where they were going with the tippytoes manoeuvre. I mean yes it increases vision range, but the slight improvement doesn’t seem like it would offset the increased maintenance.)

14

u/Roflkopt3r 7d ago

Yeah you're right, there is a fair bit of armour hidden behind its head before its retracted that I overlooked.

It seems to land on the armoured rim around its neck. But it's able to retract its head remarkably far so I still think the rim catches the impact.

4

u/CipherDaBanana 7d ago

Watching closely it pulls it's ears in and neck down into its torso while performing a 90 degree rotation to land on his head. The head is flat for this reason I assume.

3

u/AICPAncake 7d ago

Yeah, especially when they do it while jumping up straight in front of your car as you’re driving down an unlit county road just before dawn. Sounds a bit like an armadillo getting hit by a car.

→ More replies

89

u/ronearc 7d ago

They'd be pretty tough, if they weren't complete morons. The ones who get run over by vehicles typically do so because they jump when the vehicle is over top them.

They'll run straight to their burrow, but just stick to head in and consider themselves hidden. In the absence of a burrow, they'll just stick their head under a leaf or small branch.

They're just idiots. But they're pretty cool when they're not digging up your yard.

29

u/ColKilgoreTroutman 7d ago

Yeah, but when are they not digging up your yard?

29

u/ronearc 7d ago

Historically, after I've shot them. But I live in Canada now, so armadillos can dig up Texas all they want without consequence from me.

46

u/SuperTord 7d ago

It almost sounds like they won...

12

u/ronearc 7d ago

I spent the last four years in British Columbia instead of Texas. Armadillos can try to claim they won Texas, but I'm confident I won overall.

46

u/IrrelevantCynic 7d ago

Sounds like a man who is trying to convince himself he didn't get beaten by armadillos.

5

u/Substantial_Kick715 7d ago

I know nix about armadillos so please excuse my ignorance, did you shoot them for food, protection( of livestock), because thier pests, or for sport?.

5

u/ronearc 7d ago

Protect the garden and our pets. They'll destroy gardens, yards, flower beds, etc., but they're also a carrier of leprosy, which they can pass to cats or dogs through claw attacks, and they have vicious claws for digging...though they're not aggressive, they can mess small animals up while defending themselves.

I'd only shoot them if they were spotted in or near the garden and/or we'd seen evidence of their burrows. If they weren't close enough to be a pest, then live and let live.

u/XenoRexNoctem 7d ago

Usually to avoid breaking an ankle in the new yard craters they dug overnight

8

u/TacticoolFudd 7d ago

Not op but I've had to cull them on my property. They absolutely wreck yards, fields, gardens etc. Like you wouldn't believe how much damage they can do. I was absolutely astounded.

mf literally just did a Sonic the Hedghog move.

They should have called Sonic to "Sonic the Armadillo"

7

u/RedditModsAreCancer1 7d ago

Only the three banded armadillo can do this. Most can jump 4 feet straight up and that’s why so many get hit and killed by cars. As the car goes over they freak out and jump into it.

13

u/XenoRexNoctem 7d ago

This is super fun when you're on a motorcycle because you end up with a sudden lap armadillo

3

u/sictransitlinds 6d ago

There’s not much better than a free surprise lapadillo.

17

u/zebrahdh 7d ago

“This evolutionary trait was passed down by other armadillos that could almost shut all the way but still let predators eat them a little around their edges.”

4

u/XenoRexNoctem 7d ago

Sometimes they dodge by leaping 3 feet straight into the air which is super fun when you're on a motorcycle and a terrified flying armadillo hits you at chest height.

3

u/1nfiniteJest 7d ago

literally putting one's head between one's legs and kissing their ass goodbye.

5

u/lootedcorpse 7d ago

my here's multiple types of armadillo, and only like one can turn into a ball all the way. you're previous thoughts describe all the other types of armadillos.

I like how, for just a moment, he appears to levitate when his legs fold inwards. Like he curls up faster than the gravity takes effect.

187

u/Trypno 7d ago Silver

that’s called jumping

34

u/Leicabawse 7d ago

There’s no jump, he doesn’t gain height. His legs curl up within his ‘shell’ and he stays static for the smallest moment before gravity kicks in.

20

u/Fpvmeister 7d ago

It needs new internet, its gravity is lagging.

18

u/AssumeTheFetal 7d ago

I was at Krispy Kreme with my parents one night as a high schooler and the popular kids were all hanging out together with their clique with no parental supervision and I remember wishing so badly that I could become invisible.

Looking back, it’s so weird that I’d be embarrassed by something like that, but I guess that’s part of growing up. As an adult, I love hanging out and going places with my parents and don’t give a shit about any of those popular kids from high school.

Teenage years are a hell of a drug.
