Omicron is only interested in your top one, so keep it covered in public. But you might as well keep your bottom one covered in public as well.

4

u/tawhid87 Nov 29 '21

your comment is much funnier than the post itself.

I'm sad this isn't the highest up voted comment.

Honestly, it took to long to get to such a point.

Why doesn't Delta, the largest of the varients, simply eat the other 5?

101

u/MrLynch1878 Nov 28 '21

Perhaps they are saving that for sweeps

23

Wasn’t Xi supposed to be the next variant? Seems like I blinked and missed it.

5

Not worth the trouble.

2

u/IamnotaJedi Nov 29 '21

I’m all for circling back when a worse one hits tbh

12

u/Oknight Nov 29 '21

They were afraid XI would get confused with Numerals... Like "Covid XI, the Return" and Nu would get confused with "New".

11

u/keshengjie Nov 29 '21

Xi is a common surname in China.

3

u/Jd20001 Nov 29 '21

7

u/JohanPertama Nov 29 '21

What if the Mayans intended to write 2021 instead of 2012

4

u/paul-arized Nov 29 '21

They didn't write 2012 because that number is what corresponds to our modern calendar and not what they chose arbitrarily It's supposedly a 5,125 year cycle and the last time the celestial event happened was back in 355 B.C., hence 2012.

2

u/Representative_Fun15 Nov 29 '21

Say what you want about the Mayans, but they created a calendar that was good for tens of thousands of years and ultimately was only off by 4.

"The Nu Variant."

"That's it"

"That's what?"

"That's the name."

"What is?"

"The Nu Variant."

"Not no, Nu"

"That's not what I meant."

"What did you mean?"

"I'm asking about the new name"

"I told you that's it."

"That's what?!? Ok let's start over. This new variant?"

"Yea"

"It's new"

"Yeah!!"

"Just been discovered"

"Oh yes. New Nu"

"Knew new?"

"No"

"hang on I'll m not done"

"Go"

"This new variant, just been discovered"

"Right brand new"

"And the give it a new name"

"Exactly"

"Hang on, I'm not done."

"But you got it."

"got what?"

"The Nu name"

"New name. Ok I can get this. Hang on"

"You already got it but go on"

"They gave these new variants names. And this new variant has a new name"

"Precisely"

"Hang on, I'm not done yet"

"Ok, but you already got. Keep telling this guy he's got it, but he keeps saying 'hang on' and I don't know why."

"I'll tell you why. This new variant has a name, and it's a new name, different from all the rest, a new name that no other variant has, and I just want to know about the New Name."

"Oh why didn't you say you wanted to learn more. Here's a pamphlet"

"'whats this? 'Nu Variant' Oh for fucks sake."

2

Classic Nu's on first..

3

5

u/JustABizzle Nov 28 '21

It’ll prob go to double letters, like chapters of a fraternity

3

u/tsuki_ouji Nov 29 '21

most obvious move would be to approach it like it's hex code, loop around

alpha-alpha

alpha-beta

alpha-gamma

and so on until alpha-omega

then you start beta-alpha

beta-beta

beta-gamma

et cetera

3

u/poozemusings Nov 29 '21

That whole thing has been debunked ten times over now, and I'm tired of seeing it.

<sigh> it is true what they say: Women are from Omicron Persei 7, men are from Omicron Persei 9.

3

u/coffeewithalex Nov 28 '21

What's Omicron Persei 8:

Omicron Persei 8 is an actual address to a planet. Whether it exists or not is a different story.

Persei refers to the constellation of Perseus.

Each constellation covers an area in which we can observe many stars. The brightest of those stars are named by greek letters, in order of their brightness. Famous example: Alpha Centauri is the brightest star in the Centauri constellation. Sirius - the brightest star, is Alpha Canis Majoris. Of course some stars have actual names, like Sirius, Betelgeuse (my favorite star).

This naming is called the Bayer designation.

And the 8 is the number of the planet, from the star. Earth is the 3rd, Omicron Persei 8 is the 8th. And there's the saying: Men are from Omicron Persei 9, women are from Omicron Persei 7.

It's name is Atik.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omicron_Persei

Fun fact that I just found out: it's a tripple star system, which is funny because in the novel by Liu Cixin, "The Three-Body Problem", aliens from a triple star system come to invade Earth, which I found to be a very weird coincidence.

2

u/putsch80 Nov 29 '21

Probably not a coincidence. More likely an intentional choice by a group of very smart writers.

1

u/coffeewithalex Nov 29 '21

https://futurama.fandom.com/wiki/When_Aliens_Attack aired in 1999

Liu Cixin wrote the ideas for the book in 2006. Was he inspired by Futurama? I think that would be a long stretch. So much research, so many connections, only to make the book NOT about Omicron Persei, but a system much closer. It bears very little resemblance to the ideas in the Futurama episode to be honest.

1

u/WikiSummarizerBot Nov 28 '21

Omicron Persei

Omicron Persei (ο Persei, abbreviated Omicron Per, ο Per) is a triple star system in the constellation of Perseus. From parallax measurements taken during the Hipparcos mission it is approximately 1,100 light-years (330 parsecs) from the Sun. The system consists of a spectroscopic binary pair designated Omicron Persei A and a third companion Omicron Persei B. A's two components are themselves designated Omicron Persei Aa (officially named Atik , the traditional name of the system) and Ab.

u/Oknight Nov 28 '21 edited Nov 28 '21

If you didn't know the convention is "brightest star in the constellation by appearance from Earth ranked by Greek letter", followed by the genitive form of the name of the Constellation in Latin. (This is called the Bayer designation) So Omicron Persei is the 15th brightest-appearing star in the constellation Perseus. Omicron Persei 8 would be the 8th designated planet of that star system (if the star weren't a multiple star system which it is).

I'm convinced that the comment was about Futurama.

2

u/Wizzle-Stick Nov 29 '21

I was instantly reminded of the game Omikron the Nomad Soul.

24

u/DaytonaDemon Nov 28 '21

I hope you're punkin' us. Omicron is the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet, so it precedes Futurama by thousands of years.

12

u/puetzk Nov 28 '21

Also, Omicron Persei is just a real star (cluster), named in the usual Bayer designation. So Omicron Persei 8 would be the 8th planet of that star system (though I'm not sure quite how planets would be numbered in a triple-star system).

Most brighter stars have a systematic name of <greek letter> <constellation>. E.g. Alpha Centauri is the brightest star in Centaurus, Tau Ceti is the 19th-brightest star in Cetus, Epsilon Eridani is 5th-brigest star the in Eridanus, Omicron Persei is the 15th-brightests star in Perseus, etc (the latin constellation names are conjugated into their genitive case).

Most prominent naked-eye stars have a naming in this fashion, though a lot of them have a more popular name from some other source too - e.g. Vega is also α Lyrae, Sirius is α Canis Majoris, Aldebaran is α Tauri, etc. Only a few use the Bayer designation the popular name. And these get a lot of showing in Sci-fi, for whatever stylistic reason (mix of familiar and foreign-sounding?).

5

u/view-master Nov 28 '21

Fry has been know to time travel and even do “the nasty in the pasty”.
