That's a neat cat house!

928

u/Mookadonia 7d ago

I built that for him. But so far, he prefers to sleep in a cat bed under my work table.

659

u/Youmati 7d ago

So…a “stray” cat has a house and a separate bed in your heated garage and you let him in/out when he wants and feed him.
You’re just a microchip away from full cat-dad. Very nicely done 🐾

500

u/arealpandabear 7d ago

How is he still a “stray”? I’ve never built a house for my cats! 😂 You are clearly his slave! Now let him in the rest of the house, take him to the vet, have him chipped, and accept your fate!

245

u/DrinkSomeConcrete 7d ago

My stepdad has started feeding my neighbour’s cat. She died from COVID. He “hates” cats… but orders the good food from Amazon… and dewormer… and was asking me about which little heated cat bed, like the one in the OP, would be good because it’s been raining and he worries about the “mangy bastard” he doesn’t want in his house. Like, okay old man. 🙄

129

u/arealpandabear 7d ago edited 7d ago

Oh the neighbor died— I had to read that a few times wondering why your dad is taking care of a cat that died of COVID. All dads do that! End up being the best caretakers of pets they never wanted lol

u/Singin_inthe_rain 7d ago

You have a cat, my friend.

51

u/Spiker1986 7d ago

I love the cat house. Plans from somewhere or entirely diy?

I hope you and the cat had a great holiday ;)

95

u/Mookadonia 7d ago

I just built it out of scrap wood. There was no plan.

60

u/Glitter_berries 7d ago

I hope you know how incredibly attractive that is

43

u/myboogerstastespicy 7d ago

Please put it outside for the real strays. They’d love it more than your stray does.

175

u/Mookadonia 7d ago edited 7d ago

I'm planning to as soon as there is snow on the ground, otherwise my chickens will vandalize it. They're like a gang.

68

u/myboogerstastespicy 7d ago

I love it.

We used to have chickens and they were definitely a gang. Mom called them the “lovely ladies.”

54

u/rice_cake327 7d ago

That's a really good advice right there! OP did an amazing job with that little house, looks comfy and warm.

99

u/Mookadonia 7d ago

It's heated.

90

u/velveteenelahrairah 7d ago

His own heated kitty house, Thanksgiving dinner, a human who clearly loves him and tends to his needs and cares for him...

Mmm hmmm. Totally a stray. Yup.

16

u/darkdetective 7d ago

My cat would love something like this. Sadly I am bad at DIY!

It's been a year. He still won't come inside the house. But the garage is attached, heated, clean. We don't keep our cars in there. I use it as a work space. He has clearly made it his home. I let him out when he wants to go outside.

3.1k

u/Singularity54 7d ago Helpful Wholesome Starry

My friend, you own a cat. He's not a stray, he just doesn't want to hang with you 24/7. You built him a little kitty hut, you clearly feed him, and he sleeps in your property. You have had a kitty for a year. Congratulations.

My last cat was at least 22.

"New" cat is over 12.

I love cats but if someone were looking for a short lived pet they should probably get a hamster.

39

u/Parsley-Quarterly303 7d ago

Eh I'd be satisfied with a 15 year run. Life as an adult sucks balls lol

9

u/Not-A-Lonely-Potato 7d ago

My old girl is beyond spoiled. We use the excuse that she deserves to live out her golden years comfortably, but it could be we're just suckers and she has us trained to give her whatever she wants (except the dreaded monthly vet visit, her pitiful cries go unheeded).

3

That's a very fancy way of saying that you live in the servant's house on your cat's property.

Makes sense that he doesn't see any point in exploring the servant's quarters. Its all very Victorian really.

49

u/OneMorePenguin 7d ago

I know several people that provide food, shelter and medical care for their "stray" cat. The cat likes people, but he has no interest in coming inside. They provide a little room with a heated bed for him in the winter. Gandalf even likes strangers who come to feed him when they are away.

Thank you for being a parent to this nice looking kitty. He looks healthy. What is this gentleman's name?

33

u/AudioAccoustical 7d ago

You mean … you have a shop cat. Lol. Every shop I’ve ever been in has had one. So this little guy has just gleefully accepted the position. Congrats!

22

u/cortez0498 7d ago

That's not a stray, that's your outside cat. Just be a responsible owner and it won't be a problem if he's outside a lot (like neuter him).

11

u/Bwleon7 7d ago

He doesn't go in your house because you gave him his own house(garage).

4

u/ilovetotour 7d ago

My cat lived in my garage too! We had a bunch of dogs, and my mom didn’t let me take in (literally) the then-stray. So she lived there for a couple of years lol

5

u/spaceguitar 7d ago

Yeah you own a cat now. 😂

Growing up, my neighbor had a cat that would NOT stay inside. I mean, he would sometimes, but he’d just… wander the neighborhood. Eventually he literally sprinted into our home one day while we were bringing in groceries or something, and he just… never left! I spent many Christmases with him snuggling my head. Then he’d disappear for a few days after needing to go outside, only to come back, ready to snuggle in my bed. The neighbor joked about how we had joint custody.

Man, I miss that cat. 💕 RIP Buddy

My husband and I tend to take in stray kitties as well... It's the finding other homes part that we haven't gotten good at yet, lol.

9

u/PolymerPussies 7d ago

Yeah it can be hard. I got so attached to one kitten I broke down in tears when handing her off to her new family.

5

u/InkedInIvy 7d ago

Yeah... By "haven't gotten good at yet", I really meant "haven't", end of line, lol. We currently have 5 cats and my husband has already declared that our next one will be named "Six". I dunno that we'd have much luck rehoming anyway, though, since the ones that find us tend to be "less adoptable" cats. One's missing an eye, another's missing both and yet another is auto-immune and allergic to everything. And if she's not allergic to it, she will be within 2 weeks of having been exposed to it, so she's on daily immunosuppressants.

My cat will barely show interest in human food, but turkey is nearly the only exception.

38

u/aluked 7d ago

My cat is almost the same, but his exception is, weirdly enough, peanut butter.

And he goes crazy over it, I touch the jar and he comes darting, regardless of how far or asleep he is.

10

u/boatsnprose 7d ago

I have one like that. No interest in most treats but he will wake up from death if I put peanut butter anywhere near his nose. Shit is so cute. Wish it wasn't so fatty.

9

u/velveteenelahrairah 7d ago

My tuxie is like that with tuna! Sleeps like the dead when I'm eating chicken or fish or meat or seafood a few feet away, doesn't even move if I'm eating a ham sammich right next to him, will accept Dreamies if I absolutely insist, but the second I crack open the tuna can? He's at the kitchen door with the big hopeful goo goo eyes waiting for his cut lol.

(He even lets me give him cuddles and kisses and belly rubs and pet his feet and face. I think he's broken.)

7

u/boatsnprose 7d ago

Nah, probably not broken, just willing to suffer for the tastiness. My guy is usually quick to bite the hell out of me if I annoy him, but he will put up with so much if I've got something he likes on hand. I push it too far but, hey, them's the breaks.

Cats are something else. I've only had them for a few years, and the personalities on these things are just beyond what I could have expected. They are always going to tell you exactly what they like with zero ambiguity.

I surprisingly don't have much luck with tuna with these guys. Well, tuna Churu treats yes. It's like the alley behind a fish market when I bust those things out.

5

u/velveteenelahrairah 7d ago

He lets me mess with him even when there aren't treats on hand. I can even scoop him up and cuddle him when he's fast asleep and he'll just give me a sleepy blink and a confused little purr and let me snuggle him all I like. He's basically a living stuffed toy who's even a perfect well behaved gentleman at the vet and who's accepted that his hoomin is a goofball, lol.

Meanwhile his old owners insisted he was mean and unfriendly and complained about him hissing at them all the time. Something tells me they were the problem here, not him.

32

u/AssBeast 7d ago

Same with my cat. Except when it comes to chicken. She is well behaved so she won't go on the dinner table but she will sit on one of the chairs and glare at it. If I don't give her some she will jump into my lap and just yoink a piece right off my fork. Impossible to stop. I don't cook chicken any more without making sure there is enough for her so I can eat in peace. She is a well behaved old lady but chicken brings out her bad side.

20

u/drrj 7d ago

I can’t eat ham and cheese any more. I end up with three hungry little demons demanding pretty much every part of it.

11

u/AssBeast 7d ago

Some cats lose control around their favourite food. I hope you didn't hold that against him. I had a cat who lived for 23 years who went mental for minced beef. She would even bite me if I had it in my hand. Other than that she was the sweetest thing. She would greet visitors by just purring when they met eye contact. But any time minced beef was involved she turned into a goblin.

OK. For all the bespectacled nebbishes and involuntarily celibate losers that have chosen to speculate about my marriage on a thread about a cat, the fact is we, meaning me, my wife and child, celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday. My parents and her parents are dead. Her anti-vax brother-in-law invited us over for a catered turkey 50 miles away from where we live. I elected not to go. There is no animus, no grudges, no harsh feelings. I have a very happy and stable relationship with my wife.

The fact that a tiny fraction of the shocking number of people that have commented on this photograph have seen fit to make this about their sexual angst says much more about them than about me and the stray cat living in my garage.

So for all of those losers that are bitter and jealous of anyone that has a significant other, I urge you to go back to your porn and video games so that the vast majority of us that are here for nothing more than polite banter can enjoy positive sentiment about each other and the animals we care for. Thanks.

ps: I took the cat to the vet. He is vaccinated, neutered and well cared for.

People suck, but animals will always be wonderful in their own way. Enjoy yourself and let the trolls self-detonate. Happy Thanksgiving!

I too have a Garage Kitty™! Someone kicked him in the face so he lost half of his teeth so even tho he's "feral" he's gotta stay in the garage because I do not trust he can defend himself anymore.

The cat thanks you. I thank you. The commenters here thank you. Hell, maybe your in-laws even thank you.

Happy Thanksgiving! Give your partner a back rub later. The human one, I mean.

Awwww. My cat was a stray and came looking for a home on thanksgiving day. I took her in and that’s been her birthday ever since. She’s turned 12 today.

Built buddy a house. Lives in the heated garage. Vet visits. Avoided the in-laws Thanksgiving to have it with buddy. Bet you've even named him, looks like a Ben if I had to guess.

That's your cat, my dude.

I'm sorry to tell you, but the stray cat that lives in your garage isn't a stray cat that lives in your garage.

It's your cat.

And it lives in your garage.

You got the better end of the deal.

I think that’s a fabulous idea!

5x better conversations, no doubt.

Have a wonderful day! I’m sure the cat will love you forever for that. Love the sentiment! 🙏🏻

u/CableVannotFBI 7d ago

Wise choice. You’ll probably get some appreciation and affection from the cat.

Tell me you're an introvert without telling me you're an introvert.

I like you.

If that handsome sweetheart lives in your garage, I wouldn't call him a stray! In fact, it looks like he's moved in and adopted you!

Happy Thanksgiving! Here's to many more Thanksgivings with this cutie pie to come. 💕

How he stray if he live in your garage tho

5

u/arsenalgooner77 7d ago

Enjoy your day! Unfortunately this morning we had to put the stray we care for to sleep. Well, he started as a stray 13 years ago, living in our back porch, then became the stray we moved to our new house and lived in the garage, then became the stray that lived in our newest house after moving three years ago.

Wasn’t a great start to Thanksgiving but he was a great cat and we’ll have fond memories of him!

u/Kara_Wolf 7d ago

That's not a stray cat. That's your cat now. You celebrated Thanksgiving, it's family.

Honestly, that’s the best, more fulfilling choice. Sound judgement meow guy.

how bad is it at your in laws...

4

u/l8weenie 7d ago

Some of our cats are, uh, more…independent than others but that’s your cat. I don’t build homes for cats that aren’t considered mine

My relatives decided COVID was fake and vaccine was a Bill Gates plot. I both applaud and am jealous of your option.

3

u/LoreleiGoh 7d ago

Just be a responsible owner and it won't be a problem if he's outside a lot

4

u/Serinatchard 7d ago

I hope you will share some with him.

u/IO_engineer 7d ago

that is the most reddit thing you can do.

That are not a stray anymore, you are their human.
