macOS iOS 15.3 and macOS 12.2 finally fix Sidecar!

Ever since Monterey came out (and possibly during Big Sur as well) iPad Sidecar stoped working wirelessly. When using Sidecar was running wirelessly it would freeze after a few seconds, and would only only work when connected in wired mode. Now with 15.3 and 12.2 RC, Sidecar has finally been fixed!

iOS First in, Last out audio priority HAS TO END!!!!

I absolutely hate that iOS will ALWAYS pause what I'm listening to if anything ELSE happens to make a sound. If I'm listening to something THAT'S what I want to hear. They need to make it so if you CLICK on the offending video or other sound source that takes priority...some updates also make this happen when a muted video plays and it makes me crazy!!! Anyone else?

Promo Sunday My first free iOS game reached 100k users! I’ve added new content and would love to have you check it out!

Hi Guys,

A few months ago I released my first iOS game called SkillZone. It’s a series of (now) 14 mini games that you have to play in one go to try to get onto the leaderboards. It somehow started spreading pretty quickly through word of mouth and App Store recommendations and just reached 100k users!

I’ve added 2 new games to the app since then and would love to have you give it another try.

As my first game, this has really motivated me to continue my iOS development side hobby. Super thankful to the Redditors who’ve given their feedback throughout, I’m always open to hearing more!

It's a premium game, no ads or in app purchases to distract from the experience. If you check it out please let me know what you think!

iPhone Grayshift is constantly evolving their proprietary Graykey product which unlocks phones for law enforcement, and allows them to completely extract the file system from your phone. Here are some cool new features of their product you might find interesting.

The first interesting feature you might find interesting about is a feature Grayshift refers to as Instant Unlock. This feature allows allows law enforcement to instantly unlock your smartphone, regardless of if bruteforce is supported for that particular phone. Here are some links which mention this feature.

  1. https://www.grayshift.com/glossary/

  2. https://ibb.co/0Y2XP91 This comes from a marketing document talking about various licensing options for Graykey.

  3. https://ibb.co/QfzM2F0 This is a document talking about the various phones and operating systems Graykey supports. This document was uploaded when Grayshift filed their product to be trademarked. It was filed July of 2020, and mentions this Instant Unlock feature. It also shows that at the time that document was made, Graykey supported all iPhones, and operating systems for it.

Another thing Grayshift has done in the past year is introduce Android support for their product. They are also constantly adding more phones the product can unlock, and extract data from. Here are some articles talking about this.

  1. https://www.grayshift.com/newsroom/grayshift-introduces-android-support-on-graykey-for-mobile-device-forensics-companyextends-ios-forensic-leadership-to-android-devices/

  2. https://www.grayshift.com/groundbreaking-insights-into-graykey/

  3. https://www.forensicfocus.com/interviews/grayshift-co-founders-david-miles-chief-executive-officer-braden-thomas-chief-product-officer/ This link is a interview with Grayshift creators, talking about their product. It also mentions how their innovative product is constantly updated, and often supports same day support for the latest operating systems.

The last thing I will share with you is a document Grayshift published recently, which talks about 10 reasons you need Graykey. To get access to this document, I put in a fake email, which granted me access to the document.

Apple Watch A List of Articles Explaining That Apple Uses Slave Labor and Child Labor and is Currently Actively Fighting to Continued Access to Slave Labor

Upvotes

Money spent on Apple products has gone, and goes, toward Apple's attempt to subvert detection of slave labor in their supply chain, and it is bankrolling their hold on continued revenue they claim from using concentration camp, child and slave labor in China:

Mac Have to return MBP M1 16” because of the way MacOS renders fonts

Upvotes

I’ve spent a few days with my new MBP M1 16”. It’s a beautiful machine and it makes me want to sit and code and be creative, but the way that MacOS renders fonts / text is a dealbreaker for me. I have it right in front of my windows machine monitor, same website on both, and the windows machine is so much more clear and crisp and easier on the eyes. I’ve turned off font smoothing on the Mac but it’s still no contest.

This is really unfortunate because I was so excited about this machine. But my eyes are literally sore from adjusting to it over the last few days. Looking at the two screens together, the windows machine is just so much easier on the eyes.

AirTags Using AirTag for Alzheimer’s

I thought this community could benefit from seeing how this individual is using the apple AirTag to track their parent with Alzheimer’s, but also I want to join the chorus asking for an update to be able to share the location of the AirTag with family members. (We bought one for our dog.)

“Just bought a 4 pack to help my mom track my dad who is starting to wander off as a result of Alzheimer's. My siblings and I have access to track his phone and thought it would be the same with AirTag! Big miss. This would reduce the stress for our whole family with the sharing ability...”

Promo Sunday Word Game Hero - word puzzle guessing game for iOS with features including SharePlay! Mentioned this week in Daring Fireball. Giving away promo codes for one time Unlimited IAP to unlock all features.

Hey folks!

I'm an indie developer who just released a word puzzle game playable over FaceTime with SharePlay!

Word Game Hero is available now for iOS with MacOS in the works.

John Gruber mentioned it during the week on Daring Fireball, saying Word Game Hero "is to Wordle as Words With Friends is to Scrabble".

Like lots of people I got hooked on Josh Wardles daily online challenges with Wordle, and these were my first introduction to the Lingo format from the game show. I saw Katherine Peterson's continuous version on GitHub and that only fuelled the fire.

I've spent hours since then building what I want out of a word puzzle game!

Features

  • Unlimited puzzles from a dictionary (10 a day if unlimited not purchased)
  • Native UI that looks and feels right at home on iOS (built with SwiftUI)
  • Share specific puzzles with friends
  • SharePlay to be able to play with friends or family anywhere in the world over FaceTime!
  • Clues so that there is another element to gameplay and building a streak
  • Additional letter modes between 4 and 7 letters
  • Customise UI, app icon and even gameplay
  • Stats on your win rate and number of guesses needed
  • Streaks and targets
  • Dictionary definitions for puzzle words

Coming soon

  • Time limits so you can control how much you play
  • More ways to challenge your friends! Game Center? Wait and see. Yes.

Ads

  • I am using Not Evil Ads in the game, which is my own privacy friendly ad platform that I'm working on. The ads are privacy friendly in that they are not correlated or cross referenced with your activity anywhere else at all. They work like say a podcast ad does where a business will pay for placement, and then use a referral code i.e example.org/wordgamehero for a discount.
  • At this stage of development the ads are basically a list of apps I am choosing to promote, my own and some other developer friends, and only displayed in my apps currently. As well as using the native Apple UI for promoting an application these only show up once every 12 hours rather than being a permanent banner or similar. Again, pretty much all these decisions come down to me as a developer building an experience that me as a user would have no complaints about.
  • The eventual goal is for a very similar UI/UX as currently but with paid promotions, say Grammarly might be a good fit for sponsorship in this app for example.

Pricing and thoughts

  • One time $2.99 USD IAP (works with Family Sharing) to unlock all features:
    • Remove ads
    • Unlimited games daily instead of 10
    • If one person on a FaceTime call has unlimited then all players can continue playing unlimited games over SharePlay
  • 5 day free trial automatically on downloading
    • Personally I get really frustrated when I can't try a game or app before needing to pay! There is no IAP screen immediately but it is always visible prominently in Settings in case you are convinced and want to purchase before the 5 days is up.
  • No way to purchase clues
    • A few people have suggested this since I launched, but currently I think that mechanics like this incentivise bad game design in some ways. I've never truly loved a game with a mechanic like this, and I want to build a game I want to play!
  • Future tips/subscription
    • I may add a tip jar in future, and may increase the price of the IAP depending on feedback and response.
    • I can't justify a subscription currently in any way as there is nothing happening off the device or with ongoing costs, so I have no plans to go down that route unless features are added that have external costs. A similar pricing ethos that I want to emulate for example would be Apollo.

Easter eggs

As well as unlimited puzzles the once off in app purchase ($2.99USD) unlocks a screen to enter secret codes and find app icons. As a little easter egg for you if you're seeing it here I've made a Reddit specific icon that can be unlocked within the app! I think using Apollo has given me a slightly absurd level of polish and fun to aspire to, but it's fun to try.

PM me if you can't take the suspense and want a hint!

Promo code give away

I'll pick 10 comments at random to give a promo code to in 36 hours time, roughly ~8PM GMT 24/01/2022! A version of this post was removed last week so those who commented on that post will also be in the draw.

App Store

Word Game Hero - free, single $2.99 USD in-app purchase for Unlimited

Let me know what you think of the game, the ads or anything. I'll be around all day so happy to answer any questions at all about the roadmap, development or whatever!

Mac [Solution] Solved a few weird, MAJOR but unrelated MacOS bugs on New Macbook Pro by unplugging my external monitor?

This is not a post looking for support, as this issue is fixed. But I thought it was important to bring it up because of how weird yet potentially serious it could be for some people.

TL;DR: If your Macbook doesn't sleep or save files try unplugging your external monitor or making sure its not a 'main display'.

Recently I've had a few big issues with my 2021 M1 Max Macbook Pro (Monterey v12.0.1) with the main two being:

  • It would awake from sleep mode constantly (without input in about a minute after sleeping).

  • I could not save files or open finder dialogue boxes in programs (namely After Effects & Mozilla Firefox. Restart would not fix; no dialogue box would appear; auto save & Ctrl+S didnt work; both programs were still worked as normal otherwise).

The first was frustrating but the work around was just that I had to do a shutdown instead. The second was incredibly worrying because it prevented me from doing and saving any work in Adobe After Effects which is what I use for my job as a freelance motion designer.

After looking around for solutions I solved the first by unplugging my external monitor (Wacom Cintiq 27 QHD) when I put it in sleep. A few days later when I lost the ability to save I came across this thread on the adobe forums. I tried all the solutions (clearing caches; allowing full disk access; etc) but the only one that worked was unplugging my Wacom or no longer using it as my main monitor. I was able to recreate the glitches by reversing this. As an aside too, I've noticed my M1 Macbook Pro also takes roughly 10s to activate my external display but the same display on my Mid 2014 Macbook Pro turned on almost instantly.

I don't believe it's an issue with my specific Wacom or After Effects because the issues seems to happen across multiple programs, multiple external monitors and other people with different Macbook Pros (like the 2019 Intel version). So I would guess its a MacOS bug.

Hopefully this gets looked into soon by Apple and hopefully this post helps anyone else that encountering these or any other weird bugs.
