Can we start talking about the Quality of all these signs?

These are from management? Everything about them is embarrassing. The tone and message of course but it’s also the spacing, spelling and grammar…plus the complete lack of layout.

Pathetic.

The only qualification for most middle management positions is a pulse and the ability to say “yes”

603

u/_heron 4d ago

I see this a lot. This is frontline management. Middle management is a manager that manages other managers and is in fact under another level themselves. Middle managers don’t work with workers directly

349

u/damnitHank 4d ago

Middle management runs interference for the people who actually make decisions.

302

u/No-Hour-2734 3d ago

I had a middle management job once (kind of fell in to it by default as they needed someone to run a subsidiary office and I was the most senior person there, and the duties were in addition to my regular work). Someone described it to me as a "shitfunnel". Funnel shit down from the bosses, funnel complaints and all the other shit up from the workers. Almost no power to actually change anything. Fuck that, never again.

58

u/Tyrion6annister 3d ago

I mean, was the pay good?

123

u/No-Hour-2734 3d ago

Objectively, yes. Subjectively, nowhere near good enough. Rode it out for the year I had left - it was abroad, I already had plans to move country anyway, so I sucked it up.

123

u/Magikarpeles 3d ago

I’m a career middle manager and that about covers it. I try to be a shit umbrella for the people below because I am anti-capitalist but usually I just get burnt out doing that because the sheer amount of shit being poured downwards is just too much.

Good pay tho

57

u/Sahqon 3d ago

Had a manager like that long ago, I remember once he gathered us all together and shouted at us that "I was told to tell you all that your work was disappointing so now everybody look down and sad because the little shits are watching from the window, okay that should be enough, scatter", and when we asked what we were supposed to be doing about that (since it was some kind of material problem we couldn't really solve), he said they better be satisfied with the shouting.

He burned out in a few years though, pity because was one of the best people I've known.

I have been middle management in the past, and I agree with you. It's hard to keep your soul in that role.

I fell into my current spot as a "quality analyst coach" and I really do like this better because I no longer have any direct reports. Each month I select a pool of 'outliers' from the team lead rosters for the group I am attached to and then basically just try to help them save their jobs before it gets to corrective action.

Some of what I do amounts to correcting actual behavior, but I find myself playing the role of therapist more than quality coach most of the time. I'm not viewed as a threat by the front-line folks because I don't do any corrective action, so they end up telling me things they won't tell their TLs and shit just hurts to hear.

"Hey I wanted to pull you in because i have noticed you have taken a hit to some of your metrics, and I would like to go over a few things I am seeing and we'll see if we can figure out how to fix this."

"Yeah I guess I have kind of been struggling since my mom died."

"Oh no! I had no idea. When did that happen?"

"Well the funeral was today, so about a week ago I think?"

"..."

That was a conversation I had today, and it's stuck with me. I wanted to help her put in a request for some bereavement leave if she wanted it, but she couldn't afford to miss work because she was responsible for a bunch of the funeral costs, so all I could do for her was schedule a skills transfer for the rest of the night to help keep her from having to deal with customers.

Shit is so fucked out there.

Considering how many emails I've seen from my wife's job I don't know how these people wipe their own asses. Ex:

Hey Renee, client needs transportation set up as his appointment will be across state lines and the agency we usually use won't cross state lines. So we need to arrange other transportation for client. Can I get approval for travel reimbursement as that will be the quickest and cheapest option?

Petty is right. "I have to be miserable because I took this job, so therefore I need to make sure you feel miserable too" is not a sign of a healthy personality.

The 31st is my birthday, I request it off every year. I haven’t worked on my birthday in a long time. I never do anything special anymore, just, enjoy the day…

Pro tip though, it’s a religious holiday if you’re the right religion.

1k

u/M0n0xid37830 4d ago

October 31st is the pagan holiday Samhain for those of you who need an excuse to have Halloween off for whatever reason.

Just piggybacking this comment to say that

731

u/Cptskitz 4d ago

Ill be another level of piggyback to let you know it's pronounced "sah-win" so you can sound good while you call out.

326

u/AdvertisingTrashwall 4d ago

Piggy backing again it's actually 3 days is eve, Samhain, and Púca's day!

Here’s the tip:

Don’t request. Inform. Well in advance. Start out with that relationship.

Also, if possible, refuse to find coverage. Managing schedules is a … managers job.

All of the above is, of course, easier said than done. :(

66

u/Byrdboy 4d ago

My old boss tried making me do that shit all the time. I requested a couple of days off (maybe like 3 separate weekends) more than a month in advance and he told me to find coverage. I told him that I’m not going to be there and it’s his problem. Guess who found coverage?

51

u/OutWithTheNew 4d ago

I was a delivery driver at a pizza place years ago and went away for a weekend. As I was technically a contractor, there were things they could and couldn't make me do. So I wrote down that I was gone on the calendar as directed, a couple of weeks in advance.

Went in to work on the Tuesday, because I usually worked Tuesday and got sent home for not being in on Monday. I wasn't in town until late Monday night, I wasn't in the province, I didn't even have cellphone reception all weekend and I wrote it on the calendar.

Still got sent home because it was my responsibility to find someone to cover my shift if I couldn't make it. I wasn't even supposed to be scheduled.

So instead of going home I went down the street and got a job at a competitor making more money, doing less deliveries in shorter shifts and never went back.

Heh, yeah. At one point in my old job, they didn't like giving time off, even when it was unpaid.

But I told them 2 months ahead of time: "I'll be gone from this date to that date. If I have a job when I get back, that's great. If not, that's okay too. I don't want to work somewhere that thinks they own me."

And guess what -- I still had a job when I came back.

From my experience, Halloween and the Super Bowl are neck to neck. Super bowl is more orders in a smaller period while Halloween is business typically spread over a bit longer period of time, especially when it falls on Friday-Sunday. On those days, it's probably busier than the Super Bowl. Super Bowl business usually dies right around mid way through half time and it drops like a cliff.

Before Thanksgiving is hit or miss, usually not too much busier compared to a Friday. New Years is about the same, though it it consistently busier further into the night when compared to Friday's.

Nah. They're just that craven.

Employers are used to not paying people enough.

Employers are used to making up a slew of bullshit excuses why you will never work for more than minimum wage.

Employers have literally forgotten about basic supply and demand.

Employers would rather go out of business than pay.

They may really be hurting that much, but they are just trained too well to fuck over the worker. They really do believe they can't pay more.

We're going to see a lot of zombie businesses fail when they realize they can't can't operate on their margins and pay staff. So they stop operating.

Honestly if your place is short on people like so many are right now, it's unlikely they'd fire you at all. I had a company try to pull something similar, something like 13 years ago. They gave me permission to take some time off after my dad had a stroke and when I came back I was put on a 30 day final written warning for attendance.

About 90 days later I woke up with a stomach bug and since their employee manual said I was required to call in for the symptoms I had, I followed policy and called out. The manager simply said I needed to see a doctor and since I had stuff coming out of both ends, that was already the plan.

I called in at 5 am for a 2 pm shift. At 1:55 pm they called my landline and left a voicemail saying if I wasn’t on time for my shift, I would be fired. At that exact moment I was in the ER with an IV flowing and the doctors trying to figure out if I needed to be admitted. I had to pass my job in order to get back home, so on my way we stopped by and my boyfriend at the time ran in and dropped off the note with my return date on it. Since there was a concern I was contagious, it seemed like the best idea at the time.

I get home and find the voicemail so I call the GM the next morning to see what’s up. She tells me I’m fired for calling out while on a final written warning. I asked “even though the employee manual I signed said I was required to call in?” and she repeated that I was being fired for attendance.

I applied for unemployment and was immediately approved. The company tried to fight me on it, so I received a notice from the DOL that there was a court date and I had a chance to submit my evidence in advance. I sent in my copy of the doctors statement, a copy of the written warning, and a a highlighted copy of the manual.

They didn’t even show up to court! The best part? The job was a McJob that I had taken after burning out from a tech support gig. I made almost $20/hour at my former job but after a mental breakdown I decided to flip burgers for a while and get my brain back together. The amount I was paid for unemployment was higher than my actual McWages… and because it was during the Great Recession and there was extended unemployment, they paid me for a very very long time.

Tl:dr - keep your ducks in a row and if a company violates their own policies you can make bank. As long as you can prove it.

Great outcome for you after dealing with these assholes. Reminds me of the shit pulled on my husband during the Recession. A few months previous to canning him, his employer offered him an early retirement package. He was 61 at the time. The package sucked, and he wasn’t quite ready to retire anyway. Then, one day, HR calls him and tells him he’s being suspended for “talking negatively about the company” in front of a client. Fired three days later. Total made up b.s. The customer in question was shocked to hear they were the “reason” for his termination.

Anyway, HR told him they would fight him on unemployment. He applied the next day. After interviewing my husband, Tthe rep from EDD responded that is was obvious the company was just trying to get rid of the old guy with the highest pay. He was immediately approved. Employer never fought it. It was right before unemployment benefits were extended to 99 weeks. My husband got nearly two years of unemployment. (I mean, jobs were hard to come by at that time anyway, but no one was going to hire someone his age.) Then, he turned 62 a few months later, so got Social Security, as well. It worked out great for him. Screw employers like that.

“Doctors note or not”.. illegal af..

280

u/IceBearCares 4d ago

Unfortunately not really. Unless you're on contract or unionized, you're at-will employment, they can fire you for any reason (except a few) at any time.

Meaning they're going to fire you for a reason NOT on the no list. Like "I just don't think he's a team player."

177

u/Daikataro 4d ago

They can fire you for no reason given. But they can't fire you for any reason. Given that they explicitly state this, I'd say it's illegal now.

60

u/lvbni 4d ago

Precisely so. If they said nothing, then fired you for “no reason,” they’d be in the clear. If you called off Halloween, provided a valid doctor’s note, and then they fired you - and stated such - they’d be in violation, but you’d have to document that perfectly and be able to prove that’s why you were fired.

Many times you have to file for FMLA to protect your job from medical issues. Unless they outline a doctors note policy in their handbook, most of the time you aren’t even protected with a note. FMLA is what protects you, not a doctors note.

The dream is having everyone not show up. Go ahead and fire everyone. Let's see how that works.

Any job threatening a termination with no flexibility is not a job worth working.

Owner or manager just proved that he/she has no consideration for their employees. It happened once, it'll happen again.

7

u/tyrghast 4d ago

This is the warcry of the desperate. This is the guy when his boss asks why his department sucks he blames his employees and not himself.

If you're threatening your employees, you've already lost everyone's respect and you're digging a deeper hole.

The only justifiable response is no one shows up and instead throw a fire ass halloween party

16

u/PrestigiousAd3900 4d ago

Then call the place and order a pizza

26

u/S1de8urnz 4d ago

I dont know why people act this and are shocked they cant find workers. I joined this sub a bit naive to most working conditions, and this is just bizarre. I would not come and not call in, and encourage others as well.

How about a 10$ an hour bonus for working Halloween? You know, because you appreciate your team and want them to know your excited for them to have a good night. I really want to open a store or a restaurant. Id flaunt that my employees are paid well and appreciated. They are treated with respect and as such they would respect me. Treat people how you want to be treated.

As a manager, I never had to do that on Halloween. Is this from a haunted house? That would be understandable.

62

u/ZezimaKing 4d ago edited 4d ago

True, if this is for a haunted house I would almost understand too lol

It's most likely a kitchen

Seconding. I can almost guarantee this is fast food. Fast food is always a packed house on Halloween.

I've had so many jobs like that. Terrible bosses, terrible ownership, terrible coworkers, miserable conditions. I have a much better job now where I'm treated very fairly.

I still feel like calling out every day.

13

u/cthunders 4d ago

Fuuuuuck that

15

u/SidewalkFisherman 4d ago

I hate workplaces like this, where some mental midget who makes an extra two bits than you puts up asinine signs like this. I worked at a few places like this in my twenties. Very aggravating.

83

u/sacrificial_blood 4d ago

Not sure they can legally do that. Good thing you took a picture of that. Maybe discuss it with HR.. if they actually give a fuck.

64

u/seinman 4d ago

The sad part is, in many jurisdictions, they CAN do that. Capitalism is FUCCED

Best thing to do: make sure no one shows up.

58

u/NimueAstra 4d ago

Most holidays are ripped off pagan holidays, Halloween included. I always make sure my employer knows they will not see me on Samhain, they don't get a choice in the matter of my spirituality.

WHAT IN TERMATION

31

u/Silver_Ad7963 4d ago

I just don't understand why we can't keep this damn schedule full. Unemployment is killing us

9

u/Boring_Upstairs_8361 4d ago

Quit and reapply after Halloween; you'll get the job because of LaBoR ShOrTaGEs right?

If not; go to any of the other 50 restaurants in your city that will pay you shit and make you rely on the generosity of customers...

9

u/EnceladusSc2 4d ago

Okay, have fun working by yourself.

9

u/Sharpshooter188 4d ago

Thats my birthday. Fuck off. Im going to go eat cake.

Call in then. Show up next shift and show them this pic and demand your free ‘termation’

9

u/k87c 4d ago

So, when they fire someone with a doctors note, hopefully that person obtains a lawyer and owns this company.

8

u/DapperMove2901 4d ago

I sense a disturbance in the force

7

u/Smeltanddealtit 4d ago

I’ll assume you don’t work at a spelling company. Termation was the tip off

7

u/miggislim 4d ago

This is my job literally thats what they told us

8

u/MelMelbourne1002 4d ago

I love that they scribbled out the exclamation mark as if they're trying to suddenly make the message seem calm instead of a raging asshole moment. Nah. Fuck you, guy.
